I took the NaNoWriMo challenge in November 2021 and Won.

By now I am sure everyone in the writing community has heard about NaNoWriMo or National Novel Writing Month.

The challenge itself is to write 50,000 words in November which is, you guessed it, NaNoWriMo.

The prize for winning is the satisfaction of being 50,000 words further along on your writing project, whatever that might look like to you. Personally, I came away from the challenge with a 50,009-word rough draft of a novel. Which I am working to edit at the moment.

The organization has grown to do so much more than just cheerlead the writing challenge. I encourage everyone to check out the website https://nanowrimo.org/ whether you want to take the challenge or not.

The website offers resources for writers including among many other things:

  • Advice from other authors
  • Discounts on tools for writers
  • Advice on the editing and publishing process.

The most obvious thing I have from taking the NaNoWriMo Challenge is the rough draft of my novel. It is not the only thing I have gained from this site however, I have friends made through joining one of the groups on the website with whom I have kept in contact, not only so we can support each other’s writing, but to just be there for each other. I have a new sense of determination with regard to my writing. The website and the people involved have helped me to realize I have something to say and there are people out there who share my passion.

Even if you never entertain the idea of taking the challenge I encourage you to check out the website.
